For children with Autism, ADHD, and other neurodivergent profiles, the mainstream classroom can be an overwhelming, sensory-heavy environment. The noise, the transitions between classes, and the rigid behavioural expectations often lead to severe anxiety and school refusal.
As a result, thousands of UK parents are turning to online schooling. But what makes it so effective for SEN?
1. Complete Sensory Control
The greatest benefit of online learning is environmental control. There are no sudden school bells, no crowded lunch halls, and no fluorescent lighting. An autistic child can learn from the safety and comfort of their own bedroom, adjusting the screen brightness and volume to suit their specific sensory profile.
2. Freedom to Move (ADHD)
In a physical classroom, a child with ADHD who needs to fidget, stand, or bounce on a therapy ball is often labeled as "disruptive." In an online school, the camera only captures their face. They are free to use sensory tools, stand at a raised desk, or take movement breaks without ever distracting their peers or facing reprimands.
3. Local Authority Funding (EOTAS)
If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and cannot cope in a mainstream or special school, you may not have to pay the fees yourself. Under Section 61 of the Children and Families Act 2014, your Local Authority can arrange an EOTAS (Education Otherwise Than At School) package. If agreed, the Local Authority is legally obligated to fund the online school placement.
