Studying GCSEs & A-Levels Online

How online students sit official UK exams, access Russell Group universities, and achieve globally recognised qualifications from home.

One of the biggest misconceptions about online schooling is that the qualifications are somehow "lesser" or unofficial. This is entirely false.

Students attending accredited UK online schools study the exact same curriculum, are assessed by the exact same exam boards (such as Edexcel, AQA, OCR, and Cambridge International), and receive the exact same final certificates as students in traditional brick-and-mortar schools.

GCSEs vs. iGCSEs: What Online Schools Use

While many online schools offer standard GCSEs, you will frequently see them offering iGCSEs (International GCSEs). Do not let the word "international" confuse you; these are standard British qualifications, deeply respected by UK universities.

Online schools often prefer iGCSEs for a very specific, practical reason: coursework. Standard GCSEs often require controlled, supervised coursework or practical science assessments that must be completed in a physical laboratory. iGCSEs are highly academic and are typically assessed 100% via written examination, making them the perfect fit for remote learners.

Do Universities Accept iGCSEs?

Absolutely. All UK universities—including the Russell Group and Oxbridge—treat iGCSEs exactly the same as standard GCSEs. They are considered academically equivalent and carry the exact same weight during the UCAS admissions process.

How Do Online Students Actually Sit Exams?

Because an online school does not have a physical sports hall to set up rows of desks, your child cannot sit their final exams "online" in their bedroom. They must sit physical papers under strict supervision.

To do this, your child is registered as a Private Candidate (sometimes called an external candidate). Here is how the process works:

1

Learn Online

Your child attends live online classes, completes mock exams, and covers the entire syllabus with their online teachers over the 1-2 year course.

2

Register at a Centre

In the winter before the summer exams, you register your child at an approved local exam centre (like a nearby participating school, or dedicated centres like Tutors & Exams).

3

Sit the Paper

Your child travels to the exam centre on the official exam dates. They sit the exact same paper, at the exact same time, as every other student in the country.

⚠️ Budgeting for Exam Fees

It is vital to note that exam entry fees are rarely included in your online school's tuition fees. Because you are registering your child at an external, third-party physical location, you must pay the exam centre directly. You should budget between £150 to £250+ per subject to cover the exam board fee and the centre's administrative costs.

A-Levels and University Admissions (UCAS)

If your child is studying A-Levels online, the process of applying to university remains entirely unchanged. Premium online schools have dedicated Sixth Form teams and UCAS advisors.

  • Predicted Grades: Online teachers will provide accurate predicted grades based on your child's mock exams and classwork.
  • UCAS References: The online school's headteacher or subject leads will write the academic reference required for the UCAS application.
  • Pastoral Support: Top online schools provide guidance on writing personal statements, preparing for university interviews, and navigating clearing.

Practical Science at A-Level

If your child wishes to study Biology, Chemistry, or Physics at A-Level and go on to a STEM degree (like Medicine or Engineering), universities usually require a "Practical Endorsement."

Because your child is learning online, they cannot do this at home. To fulfill this requirement, your child will need to attend an intensive, in-person laboratory week (usually run by the exam centre or partnered with the online school) to complete their practical assessments under supervised conditions. Your online school will advise you on how to book this.
