Why families look for a British online school in Spain

Families move to Spain for work, lifestyle, family or a planned period abroad. The timing may not fit the Spanish school year or the admissions calendar of a British international school. A child may also be midway through Key Stage 3 or Year 10, with a clear preference for the subjects and assessment style already familiar in the UK.

An online school can provide live English-language lessons from home, a regular timetable and a continuous relationship with teachers. It is not the same as a Spanish school or an international-school place, and it does not automatically resolve local registration duties. Think of it as a curriculum and qualification option to compare alongside local provision.

What to check in the online timetable

Spain is usually one hour behind the UK, so many UK lesson timetables are workable. That is a practical advantage, but still ask for the daily schedule in Spanish local time. Check start and finish times, live attendance expectations, recorded lessons, holidays and any late-afternoon clubs. A schedule that looks flexible on paper may not suit a child sharing a workspace or travelling between homes.

Also check the basics: reliable broadband, a suitable laptop, a quiet place to work and an adult who can help with routines. Online learning is not learning alone. Find out how teachers answer questions, how homework is marked and how the school notices when a child is struggling.

GCSEs, IGCSEs and the exam-centre question

Ask the school which qualification route is realistic from Spain. It may teach GCSEs or International GCSEs through Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge International or another awarding organisation. The name of the subject is not enough: confirm the specification, assessment format, speaking or practical components and exam location.

Final exams are supervised in person. The JCQ private-candidate guidance says private candidates take exams through an approved school, college or other centre, and that each centre has its own processes, fees, deadlines and access-arrangement requirements. A school that teaches online may use a partner centre, or you may need to find one separately. Ask whether a centre is available in Spain for the exact subjects, or whether the child would need to travel.

For a UK GCSE or A-Level route, clarify the location and status of the entering centre before paying tuition. For an International GCSE route, ask which centres in Spain accept private candidates and whether science practicals or other components can be accommodated. The Ofqual GCSE conditions are useful background on regulated GCSE assessment, but they do not guarantee that a particular centre accepts private candidates.

Local education rules still matter

If you are moving from England, deal with the UK school roll properly before the child stops attending. Read the deregistration guide and current GOV.UK elective home education guidance. If the child attends a special school or has an EHCP, seek advice before changing arrangements.

After you move, Spanish national and regional education rules may apply. They can differ by autonomous community and by the family’s circumstances. A UK online school does not automatically replace a local registration, attendance or reporting requirement. Continuity for children with SEN

A move does not make support needs disappear. Before enrolling, share the child’s current support plan, reports and successful strategies. Ask whether the provider has a SENDCo, small classes, accessible materials, recorded lessons, movement breaks and a clear route for pastoral concerns. A UK EHCP does not automatically transfer into the Spanish system; discuss local support separately.

Budget for the whole route

Compare more than the headline tuition. The fees guide covers common extras such as exam-centre charges, technology and practical materials. Add travel to an exam centre in Spain or the UK if needed. Ask whether the school’s fee includes registration, mocks, revision sessions, pastoral support and help with exam entries.

A British online curriculum can make a move feel more continuous, but good planning matters. The right provider will answer practical questions plainly and will not promise that a laptop alone solves every legal or exam issue.
