Can your child keep British GCSEs if you move to Dubai?

You are moving to Dubai or Bahrain. The child is already on an English curriculum — Key Stage 3, GCSEs or A-Levels. The first offer you will hear is a place at a British international school. Places are often tight, especially mid-year, and waiting for one is not a plan for next Monday. An accredited UK online school lets you keep the English curriculum with live lessons while you settle. Matching is free for parents.

The job is continuity: the same language of instruction, the same qualification path. An international-school waiting list can be a later practicality. It is not a reason to pause teaching. Keep the English curriculum — do not wait for an international-school place

GCSEs are qualifications, not a British postcode. In England, Key Stage 4 covers Years 10 and 11; the national curriculum is clear that most children take GCSEs or other national qualifications in Year 11. Exam boards set the papers. The certificate does not say whether the teaching happened in a UK classroom or on a laptop in Dubai.

What you are buying from a UK online school is the teaching and the exam map, not a KHDA school place. Live lessons and a path to GCSEs or A-Levels can start before you fly, or mid-term once you have a desk. Most of the schools we match will take a child in the middle of the year when the family is ready. We do not promise a Monday start — that depends on year group and spare seats. Start before you fly, or switch mid-term

Before you fly. If the child is still on a UK school roll, leave it properly. “We are emigrating” is not deregistration. Write to the school. The template is on the deregistration guide; the legal wrapper while you are still in England is on whether online schooling is legal in the UK. From that point they are not on the UK roll. You can teach at home for a stretch, start the online school immediately, or wait until you have a flat and only then begin live lessons.

After you land, mid-term. Some families keep the UK school until the move, then switch to a UK online school once they are in the Gulf. Confirm year group, subjects and exam board before you pay a deposit. In both cases the child stays on an English programme. They do not have to sit in a classroom they cannot follow, or on an international-school waiting list with no teaching, just because the visa is stamped.

A UK online school does not automatically satisfy UAE compulsory school rules

This is the caveat you cannot skip. The official UAE government platform is unambiguous. Federal Decree Law No. 39 of 2022 on Compulsory Education obligates the parent or legal guardian to send their children to school. Education is a fundamental right of citizens and expatriate residents. For UAE citizens it is mandatory from primary school until they finish their schooling. For expatriate residents it is mandatory until they finish the primary stage. The parent’s duties include enrolling the child in an educational institution on reaching the specified age at the start of the school year.

Failure to enrol, or to keep to the compulsory period, can bring a written warning from the Ministry of Education or another educational authority within five working days, then a report to the Public Prosecution if it continues for more than ten working days after the warning. The same official page sets out penalties: imprisonment and/or a fine from AED 2,000 to AED 50,000, with the court also able to order enrolment. Wadeema’s Law (Federal Law No. 3 of 2016) is cited there too: it is illegal not to put a child in school, or to leave them without education, during the compulsory stage without due reason.

A UK online school does not switch that off. It does not enrol the child in a Dubai private school. In Dubai, private education is regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority. KHDA describes itself as the government authority responsible for the growth and quality of private education in Dubai, and it is the body through which parent–school contracts and student services for those schools run — see KHDA for parents. Treat the UK school as the way you keep the British qualification route alive, and ask KHDA or the Ministry how a UK online enrolment sits next to local enrolment duties.

Bahrain is a different system. Do not apply Dubai KHDA rules there. Confirm compulsory-education duties locally before you rely on a UK enrolment alone. While you still live in England, the English rules apply. After you move, they do not replace Gulf rules.

Exams, fees and matching

Lessons can run on a laptop. Final papers do not. If the child is not on the roll of a physical school or college, they sit GCSEs, AS and A-Levels as a private candidate at an approved exam centre. You are paying for teaching, not a campus. For a UK-side sense of fees, use online school fees and costs. Exam-centre fees sit on top. Gulf time is ahead of the UK, so live morning classes in British time fall later in a Dubai or Bahrain day — check the timetable. Put SEN on the form.
